Eoin,

Blogburst pays only the top bloggers who generally get mega traffic. Otherwise they make it clear that you trade your content for their connections.

The problem you experience may be what I experienced recently. I have a number of media sites showing "views" and headline impressions yet NO link show up that they are utilizing my articles.

When I asked about this problem, I was told that my articles could very well have been picked up and placed on a news agency site. But the link back to me showing where the article was placed will NOT appear until a consumer clicks on the link.

That seems odd to me as I have one site that Blogburst's back end tracking system credits me with over 2,500 views--yet NO link.

Other than that mystery, it has been a very good service for me. I hope they fix whatever it is they are doing so you get the exposure you deserve.

Tim,

That is pretty awful. Is the sysndication for a specified period? When will you get ownership back? If it is open ended are there ways for you to regain control of the current content?

I recently was asked by a financial site to syndicate my blog, and I accepted, but now totally regret the decision. I'm new to blogging and thought it would be a way to attract an audience. Although I do get some traffic from the site, it's small, and my postings on their site list higher in Google than the original content on my blog. Companies are exploiting user generated content, but we're allowing them to do so. I'm going to terminate my contract with them next week.

Hello Eric,

Thanks for the comments. And the clarification. On re-reading my post I can see areas where I might have tightened my wording a little.

I would still hold that even if only from the Editorial side rather than your own, there would be pressure to use better known blogs than established complete unknowns, perhaps though that might be because the idea of establish unknowns suggests very obscure interests or much better rivals.

It would be very interesting to see a breakdown of which types of bloggers do get picked up and their profiles and popularity!

Good to see that you are reading your press too!

My name is Eric Newman and I'm the GM from Pluck (the guys running BlogBurst). I wanted to take a second to clarify some assumptions you made here.

There are no magic formulas for pick up (number of links, etc). It comes down to two things: Do we have publishers using BlogBurst in a given topical category and assuming a topic is ready for pickup, does your blog's quality warrant a pick up vs other blogs covering the same topic.

For the first part, we are working dilligently to expand the publishers' topical coverage by bringing in more publishers and helping existing publishers expand use of BlogBurst across all of the topics they cover. For example, the Houston Chronicle uses BlogBurst in more than 10 sections, while the San Francisco Chronicle is only up to 2 sections right now. Time is the biggest factor here.

The other factor for getting picked up in BlogBurst is the quality of your blog. Publishers use our tools to discover and assemble a collection of blogs to cover a given topic area. However, being picked up is going to be largely due to things you control such as posting frequency (if you post once a week your blog is less appealing than a daily poster), original content (vs link blogs), language choice and writing style. You can see our editorial guidelines on the BlogBurst site.

Certainly there's a name recognition value of a well known blog, but this is not a popularity contest. We are seeing pick ups of bloggers from all walks of life and more blogs are receiving exposure every day. Please bear with us as the scope of the service is still rather small in these early days, but our goal is to get all of our bloggers exposure to mainstream audiences through the service as it grows.

Extremely interesting post, Eoin. Whenever I see this kind of service I think, oh great, increased traffic, but it really is worth taking a moment to consider the reality behind the PR lure. Thanks for posing the case so lucidly.
