The Loss of our National Records

Eoin Purcell

War is all hell as General Sherman said
And in Ireland it resulted in the loss of a huge amount of our National Heritage in the shape of the states records. Burnt and bombed into the ether by Provisional Government forces as they assaulted the IRA positions in The Four Courts.

There was an excellent What If show this morning discussing it, and once the podcast it, I’ll link.

Another pile of our records got destroyed during the attack on the Revenue Commissioners during the War of Independence, but that’s another story.

  1. Great stuff. I used to cringe in history class when we covered this. Didnt realise the records went back to the 12th century. Mad men.
