Go Read This | Timothy McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: The State of Publishing.

Some great quotes, some interesting stats, though when I was finished I was left with three over-riding thoughts: Libraries are benefiting from the economic slowdown Audiences are fragmenting and the idea of touchstone works is being eroded Librarians think they might just replace publishers Later in our phone conversation, Ms. Reardon did start to talk like the…

Go Read This | Ebooks in public libraries – response to the Publishers Association statement | Voices for the Library

A nice polite and librarian-like smackdown of the PA position from Voices for the Library:   Not only does this threaten a service that has proven to be immensely popular with library users, it undermines the effort by libraries to reach out to housebound borrowers, the disabled and those living in remote areas far from their…

Go Read This | PA sets out restrictions on library e-book lending | theBookseller.com

The import of this statement escaped me the first time I glanced at it The Publishers Association has set out an agreed position on e-book lending in libraries that will see library users blocked from downloading e-books outside of the library premises. Faber c.e.o. Stephen Page announced the new guidelines this morning (21 October) at…

Stanford Ushers In The Age Of Bookless Libraries : NPR

The second article today that reinforces the thinking that the slide towards ebooks is starting to become unstoppable! The new library is set to open in August with 10,000 engineering books on the shelves — a decrease of more than 85 percent from the old library. Stanford library director Michael Keller says the librarians determined…

Publishing, but not as we know it

Eoin Purcell Hopes & Dreams I went to Children’s Books Ireland’s talk on Thursday 11th June on the future: ‘Publishing but not as we know it | ebooks, digital publishing and children’. Aside from the very minor quibble, that the panel had no publisher (odd given the topic) it was nonetheless by far the most…

Eoin Recommends

Ben Aaronovitch

Quality urban fantasy from a writer I expect to be a touchstone for future generations, he makes it look so easy! Also, exceptionally funny.

James S. A. Corey

Basically this is a pen name for two writers, one of whom is Daniel Abraham (only the creator of my current favourite fantasy series The Long Price Quartet*) and another hcap who I don't know, Ty Franck. Anyway, they write some of the most kick ass-est sci-fi action out there. Complete with huge themes and electric plots. Class stuff!

*I have never forgiven Orbit for releasing the series in the UK & Ireland as two two-book tomes, with utterly crap covers, and I never shall! They deserved MUCH better
